Reno – Sparks – Carson City

Nicknamed “The Biggest Little City in the World”, Reno is in the northwest part of Nevada along the border with California on eastern side of the Sierra Nevada’s. Located in the Truckee River valley about 22 miles from Lake Tahoe, it is known for its casino and tourism industry. Reno and it’s neighboring city, Sparks, are in an area known by Northern Nevada residents as Truckee Meadows. The Reno-Sparks metropolitan area is the second-most populous area in Nevada.  About a half hour south of the side-by-side municipalities is Carson City,  Nevada’s state capital. Together these three cities make up what is commonly known as Greater Reno.  

The Greater Reno area had its beginnings in 1850 when gold was discovered in the vicinity of Virginia City where a modest mining community developed, but the discovery of silver in 1859 at the Comstock Load led to a mining rush that brought thousands of emigrants to the area hoping to find a fortune.

Greater Reno has again become known as a desirable place to pursue financial success. Truckee Meadows has become a new major technology center, attracting large-scale investments from Greater Seattle and San Francisco Bay Area companies such as Amazon, Tesla, Pana sonic, Microsoft, Apple, and Google.

Residents and tourists alike enjoy the many activities and events that are always available in the area. Outdoor recreation and seasonal activities abound, and the calendar is full special events and festivals. From Hot August Nights to The Great Reno Balloon Race and the world-famous Reno Air Races, there is always something to look forward to.  Sports events are plentiful as well with the college and minor league pro teams providing competitive entertainment. Add museums, music, art, and performance venues offering cultural flavor to the great variety of available activities, and it is no wonder that the number of people and families who make the Greater Reno Area their home continues to grow.
